Our Lake Michigan story:
My wife is from Michigan and loves the Great Lakes. When we first met, she took me on a whirlwind tour of Michigan and the surrounding area which culminated in taking the ferry from Manitowoc, WI across Lake Michigan to Ludington, MI. I am from the West Coast and used to the big ocean with salty water and had never been to any of the Great Lakes. I figured this would be a quick ride across the lake and we would be on to the next item on our agenda. We boarded the ferry SS Badger, and it was only then that I realized how big Lake Michigan is. I could not see to the other side of the lake and the waters were as rough as I had seen on the Pacific Ocean. It took us 4 hours to cross that day. That was when I first learned the true meaning of "Great Lakes". They are truly majestic places.
