Our Mount St. Helens story: When I was 15, my father worked for a logging company in the Pacific Northwest. That company had an airplane. I was invited to tag along with my dad for a business meeting in Seattle. The pilot invited me to sit up front with him in the cockpit. We flew that plane over Mount St. Helens, which was the first time that I saw it. The next time I saw it was several years later when I was stationed in Tacoma, WA, with the Army and took a car trip to see my family in Oregon. The contrast between the mountain I had seen years before and what I saw then was startling. Of course, Mount St. Helens had erupted between my visits. About 1/3 of it was missing from what I had seen years before.
